I recently received an e-mail asking me why people should bother buy a used motorcycle (since they can't afford brand new ones) over a nice used car? Well, even though I'm the proud owner of a small fleet of motorcycles, I also own a car. However, I'll do my best to reply.
1. Women Absolutely Love Motorcycles
Yes, that´s true. And no one can deny it. During my youth I was a full-blown computer geek, and my high marks on Math and Algebra didn't exactly seduce the young ladies back then. But it got considerably better after I bought my first motorcycle, a 1994 Yamaha DTR 125. At that time, the one thing that was more sexy than a guy owning a car...was a guy owning a motorcycle!
2. A Used Motorcycle is Cheaper Than a Used Car
No surprise there. In the past, like most teenagers, I couldn't afford a car and was desperate for some mobility. Even though a car is more secure and reliable than a motorcycle, it's also much harder to find a parking place on the the busy streets of Manhattan. Good luck getting your car to the parking lot, while I park my motorcycle in front of the building. Also, the maintenance cost of a car is much higher.
3. No Commitments
One of my main reasons why I favor instead of cars. On my motorcycle I could go anywhere at anytime and had no problems, since the motorcycle (usually) only carries one passenger. In a car it gets worse because you need to carry around your friends and family, which gets quickly boring when you need to drive them through the rush hours.
On my bike I could go anywhere at any time and there were no expectations from anyone else - at least most of the time. On a bike you're normally alone. In a car many times you're carrying around your friends or family, but that's rare on a motorcycle.
