ATV Safety

ATVs, or all-terrain vehicles, are growing in popularity throughout the country. They come in many different sizes, including sizes that are suitable for children and teenagers. As a result, many families believe ATVs are appropriate for the entire family, and in many cases, that is true. But in order to be fun for everybody, certain rules and safety guidelines must be followed. ATVs might look like toys in some cases, but they are extremely powerful machines and they can cause a huge amount of damage if not treated properly.

If your family has recently acquired an ATV, or a few ATVs, the first thing you should do is take an ATV safety class. These classes are appropriate for anybody who has never owned an ATV before, anybody with children who will be driving the ATV or riding as a passenger, and anybody who plans to invite friends to ride the ATVs in the future. It is also a good idea to take a first-aid course if nobody in the family knows how to administer first aid. The moments immediately following an accident are critical, and all-terrain vehicles are often taken far away from cities and towns.

After you have taken safety courses, you need to look into buying the appropriate safety gear. Everybody in the family should have their own helmet that is an appropriate fit. Everybody should also have gloves, boots, and wear long sleeves and long pants. A heavy jacket provides additional protection, but sometimes a heavy jacket is not reasonable to wear, especially in the middle of the summer. Absolutely nobody should ride an ATV without a helmet, especially children. In some states it is illegal to ride without a helmet, so check your local laws.

Though there are "kid sized" ATVs, please remember that they are still extremely powerful engines, and nobody under the age of sixteen should drive an ATV. But with the proper gear and safety instruction, children may safely ride ATVs as passengers.
