Choosing a pair of Motocross boots can be a difficult decision. On the one hand, you'll want a tough, safe boot that will give you great protection and hold up for years. On the other hand, you'll want one that doesn't break the bank and is comfortable in all weather conditions. We'll highlight some of the elements you should contemplate when choosing a boot so you can decide what's most important to you.
Safety of Motocross Boots
Of course, safety should be your number one factor. Dirt bike racers frequently sustain ankle injuries that can keep them off their feet for months. Look for any or all of the following elements to ensure the best degree of safety: metal sole inserts, heat shields, polyurethane shin and calf shields, in addition to shock absorbing heel cushions.
Durability
One other safety feature not to be minimized is durability. Better quality parts enhance the general safety and life of the boot. Many high-end makers currently offer removable soles. When they wear thin, they can be removed and upgraded with new ones. Because the sole frequently wears out well before the rest of the boot, this option can help extend the boots' lifespan.
Buckles are typically made of aluminum or plastic. The latter will be less expensive but will wear out quicker.
Safety and durability are two of the most important options in selecting motocross boots so spend a bit more energy on these.
Fit
Unless you're purchasing a custom model, no boot will fit perfectly. But pliant segments in the upper, coupled with gel pads surrounding the foot will ensure you receive a tight, comfortable fit. Notice a removable lining -- this will let you adjust the fit around the foot.
If your shoe size is unusually wide, you may need to hunt around or to go for a custom-made boot. Mainstream shoes usually are only available in a single, average size.
Other Factors
Definitely consider the boot's rain resistance. Some boots offer gaiters that will keep the rain out. In addition, the amount the boot weighs is important. If it is truly a racing boot, it won't be extremely heavy, however if the extra weight is very significant to you, figure out precisely what the boots weigh before purchasing them.
Brands and Price
There are some clear leaders for high-end boots. The recognized leading model, the Alpinestars Tech 8's and Tech 10's, have a stellar reputation. However, Sidi makes some great boots, and Gaerne has raised the standard with its SG-10 model. If you need to save cash, you can do without some of the fancier features, but don't do without too much, or you will suffer from buyer's remorse.
Youth Motocross Boots
A particular note about dirt bike boots for children -- while youth choices are more restricted than grown-up's, many of the major companies make smaller copies of their boots. Although it makes sense to sacrifice a bit on durability of a boot, these boots usually do provide as many safety features as their standard offerings.
