It is easy to size an ATV helmet, but if you do not take the time to do it properly, it could be more dangerous than not wearing a helmet at all. A loose-fitting helmet is a dangerous helmet; additionally, loose-fitting helmets are noisier due to increased wind resistance and can also be exhausting because you spend so much time trying to keep it in the proper place. When shopping for children's helmets it might be tempting to buy one that is a size too big, using the logic that the child will grow into the helmet before you have to spend money to replace it. This might make sense when it comes to your budget, but it does not make sense when it comes to the child's safety. All helmets, for every rider, should fit properly and securely.
The best way to find the right size is to start by measuring the biggest part of your head. Wrap a flexible tape measure around your head, about one inch above your eyes. Once you have the measurement in inches, try on a helmet that is one size smaller than you think you need, and another that is one size bigger. Helmet sizes vary between brands and types, and you don't want to assume that one size is automatically the right one for you. If you have never bought a helmet before, it is best to shop around and try a variety of brands within your size range. Some will feel more comfortable to you than others.
The size should fit snugly against your head, but it should not be too tight. The first time you try on a helmet, it might feel too snug because of the padding, but it should not be painful. You should have to spread the helmet before putting it on. If you do not need to spread it, it's probably too big. When you are shopping for a helmet, you should test it by wearing it for several minutes. The helmet should not be snug enough to cause pain, it should not be heavy enough to wear you out, and your vision should not be impaired. You should also make sure you are wearing it appropriately, with the helmet resting over your eyebrows, not pushed back away from your forehead.
